Motorola is using the latest Aquatex texturing varnishes from Autotype International for the lens surround on its new MTH800 mobile terminal. The MTH800 will be used by a number of UK police forces, including the Metropolitan Police Service, to optimise officer responsiveness and efficiency whilst enhancing safety. The Aquatex varnishes are being used to add a texture effect to the mobile lens surround as well as reducing glare.
The new Motorola MTH800 has been specially developed for public safety users on the nationwide TETRA* communications network, Airwave, and is designed to offer enhanced communications capabilities. In particular, the innovative mobile terminal incorporates an integral GPS receiver enabling the user’s position to be plotted accurately by control room staff, allowing overall resource deployment to be evaluated quickly and easily. Furthermore, in conjunction with a dedicated emergency button that sends a high priority call back to the control room, the user can easily be pinpointed in order to send backup to an incident, if required.
The MTH800 also features end-to-end encryption capability and a high definition colour display that enables a range of image types to be viewed including faces, incident views, digital maps and specialised graphics such as police force logos.
The Aquatex FPH range provides scratch, abrasion and chemical resistant surfaces, which are created using Autotype’s specially developed printable selective texturing varnishes. Aquatex is designed for Film Insert Moulding (FIM) applications - a form of In-Mould Decoration (IMD) - and is part of Autotype’s comprehensive range of Film Insert Moulding products. Motorola is using the Autotype vanishes, which are being processed by Uniplas Enterprises Pte in Singapore, to provide highly durable selective texturing on the surface of each phone lens.
Application of the varnish is simple: Aquatex is screen printed onto the areas of the flat FIM substrate where texture or gloss control is required, it is then dried using a hot air drier and is UV cured to produce an extremely hard reagent-resistant surface.
The Aquatex FPH range consists of 4 individual products - supermatt, fine and coarse versions plus a gloss modifier - all of which can be combined to create a unique feel to the surface of a part. Furthermore, when selectively printed, Aquatex allows the integration of both glossy and textured areas on a single part, which can be deep formed to provide 3D shapes.
Aquatex is designed to significantly reduce glare generation, allowing the Motorola MTH800 to be used in a variety of environments including outdoors, in bright sunlight, or indoors, in artificial lighting conditions.
Since the launch of the MTH800 mobile terminal, thirteen out of the fifteen police forces in the UK who have announced their hand portable decisions have chosen the Motorola device.
NOTES
The Airwave services use TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (TETRA), a new open digital trunked radio standard which is defined by the European Telecommunications Standardisation Institute (ETSI) to meet the needs of the most demanding professional mobile radio users. |
